In the entire history of Indian democracy, few political rises have been as swift, dramatic, or culturally significant as that of Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar. Known to tens of millions of fans simply as ‘Vijay’ — or reverentially as ‘Thalapathy,’ meaning Commander — the 51-year-old Tamil cinema superstar has completed a journey that once seemed impossible: from the biggest screens in Tamil Nadu to the highest office in the state.

Born Into Cinema
Vijay was, in many ways, always destined for the spotlight. Born to film director S.A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar, he made his first appearance on screen as a child actor in the 1984 film Vetri. By 1992, at just 18 years old, he had his first lead role in Naalaiya Theerpu.
It was in 1996 that his trajectory truly changed. With Coimbatore Mappillai and Poove Unakkaga, Vijay broke through as a leading man with mass appeal that cut across class and age. The romantic hero of the late 1990s would, over the next two decades, evolve into one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable and beloved stars.
Three Decades of Dominance
What followed was an unbroken run of commercial success that few actors in any language have matched. Films like Ghilli (2004), Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014), Mersal (2017), Bigil (2019), Master (2021), and Leo (2023) made Vijay a box office institution — and, crucially, a figure of deep emotional loyalty for his fanbase.
Across 69 feature film credits, Vijay commanded some of the highest fees in Indian cinema. His 85,000 fan clubs spread across Tamil Nadu were not merely social groups — they were networks of dedicated, organised people who would soon become the backbone of a political movement.

The Political Turn
In early 2024, Vijay made a decision that stunned both the film industry and the political establishment: he formally quit acting and announced the formation of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2, 2024. The party immediately declared it would contest all 234 assembly constituencies independently — without any alliance partners.
The strategy was audacious. No new party had ever attempted such a sweep on debut. But Vijay had something no conventional politician could manufacture overnight: genuine, pre-existing mass devotion. His 85,000 fan clubs were converted wholesale into political cadres, giving TVK one of the most extensive grassroots networks in Tamil Nadu’s history.
TVK’s first major political conference at Vikravandi in October 2024 drew a reported 800,000 attendees — a staggering demonstration of organisational reach for a party less than a year old.
The Historic Election of 2026
The Tamil Nadu Assembly election on April 23, 2026 produced results that shook Indian politics. Voter turnout reached 85.1% — the highest ever recorded in the state’s history — signalling the extraordinary public engagement Vijay’s entry had generated.
When the votes were counted on May 4, the results were historic. TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, emerging as the single largest party — outpolling both the incumbent DMK (59 seats) and the opposition AIADMK (47 seats) on its very first attempt. TVK claimed approximately 35% of the popular vote.
Vijay himself contested from two constituencies and won both: Perambur in North Chennai by over 38,000 votes, and Tiruchirappalli East by 27,216 votes.
The result ended a 59-year lock on Tamil Nadu’s power shared exclusively between the DMK and AIADMK — a political duopoly unlike almost any other in Indian state history.

A New Chapter for Tamil Nadu
Vijay’s rise follows a proud tradition in Tamil political life. M.G. Ramachandran founded the AIADMK and swept to power in 1977 after decades as Tamil cinema’s biggest star. J. Jayalalithaa appeared in over 140 films before serving as Chief Minister six times. The line between screen and state has always been thin in Tamil Nadu.
But Vijay’s ascent differs in one critical respect: he built an entirely new party from scratch, refused alliances, contested every seat, and won — all within two years of entering politics. It is a political debut with no real precedent in modern Indian democracy.
